Three Waxwings and Not a Berry to Spare
Waxwings travel in polite little flocks and can strip a berry tree in an afternoon, sometimes passing fruit from bird to bird along a branch. We caught three of them at it under a warm summer evening.
The artwork
Their silky fawn feathers, black masks and small waxy red wingtips are painted in fine detail among clusters of dark serviceberries. The sky behind is peach melting into honey, and the laden branches reach round the cup so the feast never quite ends.
